George Stanley Porter

Funeral services for George Stanley Porter, age 81, of Greenbrier, TN will be conducted at 2 pm on Saturday, May 11,2019 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home Greenbrier with Pastor Don Sensing of Greenbrier United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Memorial Garden Cemetery, Springfield, TN. George was born on August 27, 1937 in Anderson, IN to the late Jacob Stanley Porter and Beatrice Elledge Porter. Mr. Porter served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany for 3 years. It was during this time that he met and married Sigrid Schaefer Porter. They were married for more than 52 years until her death in 2011. George worked in the trucking industry over 40 years until his retirement in 1999. He enjoyed traveling and being involved with his community. He was an active supporter of the Robertson County Family YMCA Y-Cap afterschool programs, Springfield Senior Center and the youth program at Greenbrier United Methodist Church. Mr. Porter passed away at his home on May 7, 2019. Survivors include daughters, Nanzy (John) Stewart of Prairieville, LA, Cindy L. Porter of Nashville, TN, Julia (Woody) Woodard of South Pasadena, FL; son, David (Brenda) Porter of Springfield, TN; grandchildren, Michael (Kimberly) Woodard and Andy (Emily) Woodard; great grandchildren, Haley Woodard and Liam Woodard; sisters, Lavada Ruddick and Dorothy Quate; and close companion, Beth Allen. In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by his brother, David L Porter; and grandson, John R Stewart, Jr. Visitation with the family will be from 12 p.m. unti 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home Greenbrier.
