Raymond "Chip" Throckmorton, III

Raymond T. “Chip” Throckmorton III fulfilled many roles in his life: a father, son, husband, uncle, attorney, neighbor, gifted storyteller, and loyal friend. Chip never met a stranger, and he was always ready with a helping hand and a giving heart. His generosity of spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. After battling multiple health issues courageously for six years, Chip passed away on October 1st, 2025, surrounded by family and in the caring hands of angels in the form of doctors, nurses, and the hospital chaplain at Vanderbilt. Heaven undoubtedly got a lot livelier with the arrival of Chip Throckmorton. Those close to Chip described him as “full of life in every respect.” Chip was born on April 13th, 1965, to Raymond T. Throckmorton, Jr., and Yvonne Shaver Throckmorton. Growing up in Nashville, he attended Oak Hill School and was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and Boy Scout Troop 217. He graduated from Battle Ground Academy and received a debate scholarship to the University of Mississippi. After a year at Ole Miss, he transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he met his future wife, Beth. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1988 and obtained a law degree from the Nashville School of Law in 1993. Chip practiced law for over 30 years and served as Mayor of Oak Hill from 2002 to 2006, further serving his community and the neighbors he loved dearly. Chip was always lending a hand to others and, when reflecting on his life, took great pride in the many lives he had touched. Outside of his career, Chip found his greatest joy on the water—boating, fishing, or simply relaxing with his family in Beaufort, North Carolina. He also cherished his role as “grill master” at Montgomery Bell Academy football games and at the Long Mountain father-son campouts. Above all, Chip was deeply loved by his family, friends, colleagues, and clients, and his presence will be profoundly missed. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Holder Throckmorton; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Throckmorton; son, James Edward Throckmorton and daughter-in-law, Kathryn Wargo; niece, Christina Gallagher Claxton, her husband, Dan Claxton and their three children; brother-in-law, Wade Rawlins, and sister-in-law, Judith Tillman. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Karen Elaine Gallagher. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm on November 1st, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church of Nashville, 4815 Franklin Pike. Visitation will be held prior in Courtenay Hall from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
