Josephine Humphrey Akins

AKINS, Josephine Humphrey- Age 92 of Nashville died March 3, 2009 at Woodcrest Health center at Blakeford after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years William Theron Akins of Nashville. Also preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Ethel Gibbs Humphrey, brothers Percy Humphrey and John Gibbs Humphrey, sisters Virginia (Mrs. Edward) Fox and Marie (Mrs. Ross) Fann all of Springfield; and two nephews Edward V. Fox, Jr. and Kenneth Humphrey of Nashville. Mrs. Akins was born March 1, 1917 in Russellville, KY and moved to Springfield, TN at an early age. She attended Springfield City Schools, was valedictorian of her graduating class of 1935, and received a scholarship to attend the former TN College for Women in Murfreesboro, where she earned a B.A. degree. She went on to do graduated work at Peabody College. She taught Latin and English at Coopertown High School from 1938 to 1942. After which she worked as Director of Research and Statistics in the State Office of the Department of Human Services in Nashville for 35 years, from which she retired in 1977. She was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Charlotte Reeves Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Woman’s Club of Nashville. She is survived by three nephews and five nieces, Patricia (Mrs. Carl) Mortland of Hopkinsville, KY., Ross Fann, of Springfield, TN, Beverly (Mrs. John) Saturley of Old Hickory, TN., Susan (Mrs. Bill) Owens of Actworth, GA., Carol (Mrs. Jim) Clark, Trent Fox and wife Debbie, of Mobile AL., David Fox and wife Jan, of Atlanta, GA., and Connie (Mrs. Kenneth) Watson of Brentwood, TN. All of whom added much to the continuous happiness and pleasure Mrs. Akins was able to enjoy because of the close relationship maintained with each of these relatives and their families. In addition to Family members Mrs. Akins leaves to special friends from her grammar school days in Springfield, Mary Katherine Walton and Ida Virginia Holpp both of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and friends Charles and Juanita Fentress and daughters, Karen Fentress and Beth Hallmark, and friends Bill and Joan Doughtery of Nashville. Aunt Jodie was deeply loved by all her family and friends and will be greatly missed. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Woodcrest and Alive Hospice for the loving care they gave Josephine. The Family will receive visitors at Woodlawn Funeral Home at 10:30 am on Thursday, March 5th with funeral services to follow at 11:30 am in the chapel at Woodlawn. Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements. Following the crypt side service a reception will be held at Blakeford at Green Hills.
