Duane Mayhew

Duane Mayhew, 93, of Pleasant View, went to his heavenly home on March 11, 2016. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Duane is survived by his children, David (Jenny) Mayhew, Mark (Ruthie) Mayhew, Allen (Cecelia) Mayhew, and Linda (Steve) Cart, as well as close friends, Russ and Jean Corbitt, whom he loved as his own children. He was the proud grandfather of twelve: Jennifer (Jason) Webster, Jessica (Jason) Jones, Joshua (Grace) Rowe, Rebekah (Justin) Hassell, Rachel (Buddy) Barcus, Jon (Kellye) Mayhew, Jack Mayhew, Joe Mayhew, Courtney Mayhew, Katie (Richie) Tippett, Jeremy Mayhew, and Robert Mayhew, as well as twenty-one (and counting) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mercil Evans Mayhew; parents, Hershel and Ethel Mayhew; brother James O. Mayhew; sister, Thelma Smith; and infant daughter, Nancy Ann Mayhew. Born March 22, 1922, in Allen County, Kentucky, and raised in Franklin, Kentucky, Duane was a World War II Veteran, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he went to school and became a teacher. He spent a few years teaching high school, but spent the bulk of his career (over fifty years) devoted to teaching accounting at Draughons Business College in Nashville. He was dubbed the nickname of “Papa” to the entire congregation of his church and loved nothing more than singing hymns of praise while playing his guitar, walking every day, and working in the garden. He memorized over 100 Bible verses in his nineties! Duane was a gentle, humble soul, quick with a kind word and more often than not he would offer a joke, with a straight face melting into his memorable grin. He has left a lasting impression on all who knew and loved him. A Celebrate of Life and Legacy Service will be held Saturday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m. at The Grove Church in Greenbrier. The casual and joyous occasion will be officiated by Matthew Warren, Russ Corbitt and Joshua Rowe.
