Carney Wilson Payne

Carney W. Payne, age 95, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015 at his home in Springfield, TN. He was born March 18, 1920 to Willard L. and Mattie L. Payne in Barren Plains, Tennessee. He was a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and the Tau Beta Pi honor societies. He had a career of over thirty five years as an aerospace structural engineer being involved in some of the early space programs including the NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter. He is a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Army Air Force 1943-1945. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Elizabeth E. (Libby) Payne; parents; sisters, Virgie Burr Shannon, Sally Cooper, Mabel Murphey, Carrie Lee Payne; brothers, William L. Payne, Donald L. Payne, James Lawson Payne and Stevie Garner Payne. He is survived by nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, great-great-great nieces and nephews and also by very special friends, Melanie and Brent Browning and their daughters, Rachel Ann and Tori. Services will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2015 in the Chapel of Austin and Bell, Springfield with Bro. Jay Marion Stratton and Bro. Martin Babb officiating. Visitation is Monday, June 29, 2015 from 4-8pm and again from 10am until the hour of Service on Tuesday. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery with Ed Burr, Phil Burr, Frank Ellis, Brent Browning, Frank Stratton and Bob Bell serving as Pallbearers. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions be made to Oneida Baptist Institute. Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of these arrangements.
