James Herschel Mantlow

James H. Mantlow age 85, was taken to his heavenly home on September 26, 2008. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 PM on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Brother Bud Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Adams Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 – 8:00 PM and Monday from 4:00 -8:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Mantlow was born April 12, 1923 in Todd County, Kentucky to the late Benjamin Franklin and Bessie Ruby Mantlow. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 + years Marjorie Marie Mantlow; brothers, Lewis, Billy, Bobby, and Charles Mantlow; sisters, Lizzie Haley, Annie O’Brien and Mattie Walker; grandson, Benjamin E. Mantlow. He is survived by sister, Eleanor (Wayne) Cox; son, James Ray (Mary) Mantlow; daughter, Patricia Jane Reynolds; grandsons, James Edward “Jay” (Rita) Mantlow, Joshua D. (Shanda) Mantlow and Timothy (Sharon) Mantlow; great-grandchildren, Kayla (Sam)Jones, Marshall Franklin, Bradley Gober, Brandon and Maleah Pamprin; one great great-granddaughter, Savannah Jones; special niece and nephew, Sherry & Jimmy Rains; most beloved dog & companion, Punkin; a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Mantlow served in WWII as a PFC in the 32nd Infantry Division. He saw combat in the Phillipines serving at Luzon and the Caraballa Mountains. After victory over Japan he was on occupational duty there until 1946. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, and many other awards for exceptional service to his country. After being discharged from the service he went to work in Augusta, Georgia for the government. He then returned to Robertson County where he resumed his profession as a farmer and dairyman until his retirement. Mr. Mantlow enjoyed the out of doors, but most of all he enjoyed riding his many horses. He will always be remembered for his hard work, farmers tan and the help he so truly gave to those in need. He believed in being a Good Samaritan. Kevin Ashabranner, Paul Traughber, Tyler Ogg, Matthew Traughber, Thomas Belcher Jr., and Kyle Boll served as pallbearers.
