Horace Porter Murphy

Mr. Horace Porter Murphy age 87 of Springfield passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at NHC Healthcare in Springfield. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00pm Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Brother Bob Couts and Brother Leslie Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Memorial Gardens with Bill Couts, H.T. Wilson, Tyler Wilson, Ronnie Fuqua, Willie Wheeler and Jon Offutt serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Charles "Buddy" Offutt, Jerry Winters, Randy Holt, Shirley Moore, Betty Wiegand, Terry Odom, the past and present SHS Football coaches and the past and present CEMC Employees. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 - 8:00pm and again on Wednesday from 10:00am until the hour of service at 2pm. Mr. Murphy was born on October 13, 1927 in Robertson County to the late Herbert Reams and Mary Ruth Moulton Murphey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was of the Methodist faith and was a Red Cross Blood Mobile volunteer in Springfield for over 20 years, donating over 30 gallons of blood to the Red Cross. Mr. Murphy retired from Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation after 37 years of service. He loved to watch football, and was an avid fan of the Springfield High School Football Yellow Jackets, where he transported the equipment to the Friday night games. In addition to his parents Mr. Murphy is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jones Murphy; his daughter, Patricia Murphy; his son, Stephen Murphy; his granddaughter, Sarah Renee Murphy and his sister, Julia Bell Couts. Mr. Murphy is survived by his son, Scott (Melissa) Murphy of Springfield; daughter, Sandy (H.T.) Wilson of Pleasant View; grandchildren, Tyler (Haley) Wilson, Taite (Brent) Neal, and Grayson Murphy; great-grandchildren, Maddox Reams Wilson and Avery Elisabeth Wilson. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross Blood Drive or the SHS Football Boosters. All donations may be sent care of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home. Mr. Muphy's family would like to thank the staff of NHC in Springfield and especially "Shorty" for their kindness and gracious care of their dear father and grandfather over the past year and a half.
